Winterizing Your Boat, RV, ATV, and Other Recreational Vehicles: Don’t Forget the Insurance

Summer may get most of the attention in North Idaho, but once cooler weather arrives, boats, RVs, motorcycles, ATVs, UTVs, and other recreational vehicles often get parked for the season.

While you are winterizing the equipment itself, it is also a good time to think about the insurance.

One common mistake is assuming that because something is not being used during the winter, it no longer needs coverage. Even when a boat or recreational vehicle is parked, there are still risks.

A stored boat, ATV, motorcycle, or RV can still be damaged by fire, theft, vandalism, falling trees, severe weather, rodents, or other unexpected events. Depending on your policy, comprehensive or storage-related coverage may help protect against some of these risks.

That is why it is important not to simply cancel coverage without first talking with your insurance agent.

For boats, winter preparation should include proper draining and winterization of engines and water systems, removing valuables, checking covers, and making sure trailers are secure.

For RVs and campers, owners may want to drain plumbing systems, remove food and perishables, disconnect batteries as appropriate, inspect roofs and seals, and make sure the unit is stored securely.

Motorcycles, ATVs, and UTVs should also be cleaned, maintained, and stored in a safe location. If the vehicle is financed, your lender may require certain coverage to remain in place even during the off-season.

It is also important to tell your insurance agent where the vehicle will be stored. A recreational vehicle kept in a locked garage may present a different risk than one stored outdoors or at a separate storage facility.

Another thing to consider is whether your coverage needs change seasonally. Some policies are designed with seasonal use in mind, while others may have specific requirements or restrictions. Your agent can help you understand your options.

And remember: if you plan to take an RV south for the winter, ride a motorcycle during warmer stretches, or use ATVs throughout the year, you may still need full coverage appropriate for active use.

Bottom line: parking your recreational vehicles for the winter does not mean the risk disappears. Before you change or cancel coverage, talk with your insurance agent and make sure your boat, RV, motorcycle, ATV, or UTV is protected while it is in storage.
